How many series would you like to play in the preseason or do you need to play to be ready for Week 1?
“I haven’t talked to [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] or anything about that yet regarding the first game. But I always love getting a couple series in with the three preseason games that we get. So, not sure what that looks like, but I always love getting it just to get the feel for warming up for a game, how it feels dropping back, 11-on-11, in the stadium, with the shot clock and just working all the things to get ready for game one. So, something I’ve always looked forward to actually every year.”
How’d you feel about practice against the Denver Broncos today?
“I thought it was good. Obviously, there are some plays that you remember that you wish you had back and whatnot. I thought going up against another team and competing against another team, a bunch of different set of first-string starters in the NFL, a new like scheme I thought was really good for our guys to all get out there and compete, find ways to move the ball and catch the ball against tight coverage. So, I feel like you can’t get enough of those kinds of reps. But, for them to come in and give us different looks, face some adversity, have a couple bad plays, how do you bounce back, how do you finish practice? All those kinds of things are huge things. So, I thought it was a good day overall.”
Let’s talk about the two-minute drill where you had a few targets to RB Christian McCaffrey and a handoff to him. How refreshing is it to have him complementing you in that kind of situation again?
“It’s awesome obviously to get Christian the ball in space in that situation, it’s the two minute drive. So, to be able to have him come out of the backfield, catch a couple balls, run the ball, get the first down, move the chains, obviously he’s a guy that the defense has to be accounting for. The minute he goes into a one-on-one situation, I’m drooling over that. I want that. And we’ve got to capitalize on that. So, today I thought we got some really good work out of that. I think by him being there, you get other guys that open up as well, so I thought it was really good.”
How beneficial is it to practice that two-minute hurry up offense at this pace against another team?
“I think it’s huge. Obviously, going up against our defense, there’s different things that they can do. It’s always good reps, but to go up against another defense where you haven’t seen their looks, you don’t know what their defensive coordinator is going to call. But more than anything, the bullets are moving fast. For me, I have to step up and get the ball out of my hands. It’s all about clock management. To get good looks against another first-string defense felt really good for us to move the ball like that and then score at the end. So very encouraging, but obviously there’s still some plays out there that we have to get better at collectively.”
It seemed like initially, they were fired up and were barking and making a lot of plays. It seemed like they were dominating. It seemed like you guys steadied yourself a little. Is that a total misread?
“No, that’s definitely true. I think they came out ready to roll, to compete. You could feel them. They were in the backfield a couple times, had a couple sacks and obviously some TFLs. They were ready to roll, but at the same time, it’s not like we weren’t competing at all. We are. And there are things that we need to get better at, that’s why we’re practicing. But I also do think it was nice to have a long practice like that so that we practice, we get fatigued. That’s going to happen in games. You’re not going to have a great first half, but you regroup, and then how are you going to finish? I thought we had a good second half of the practice and faced some adversity as an offense and then bouncing back and having some good periods at the end. So, I thought it was good for us. We need that kind of stuff to understand where we’re at and where we need to get better and learn from it and understand that football’s not going to be perfect, but how are you going to respond?”
You had that deep hit towards WR Ricky Pearsall towards the end of practice, down the right side, looked like you released it maybe before it was even open. We’re seeing you and Pearsall really look like you have some chemistry. I know we always talk about it, you talk about it, but is that real that there’s something with you and Ricky that you kind of know where he is going to be?
“Obviously, it just depends on the look and the scenario. Right there we had man coverage and one-on-one with Ricky and we had a good route called on so that if he did get that look he’s going to take it up to the sideline. It’s something that we’ve been practicing on this whole offseason on laying the ball and him being where he needs to be and him fighting through contact and getting separation and then the ball was right there, and it was just good timing. It’s something that we’ve been repping. So, I’m glad we got that against another defense in a crucial situation. I think it was third down and we needed that, and he made the catch and scored. So, obviously I love the fact that we were able to do that, but it just goes back to us building reps on reps on reps, all these last couple practices throughout camp and stuff, and we need to continue to do that going into this season.”
What have you seen from WR Russell Gage Jr? Do you have a comfort with him because he’s a guy who’s been in the NFL for a while?
“Yeah, I think he’s done a great job, coming in and learning all of our different details in different positions at receiver in our offense, it’s not easy. I think we sort of asked him to do a lot and he’s handled it all pretty well. And so, I think he’s done a good job of creating separation against man coverage and being where he needs to be. And he’s got good hands, very athletic. It’s putting it all together. Can you block the right guy on the run game and then the next play create separation and catch a tight-window pass? Those are things that we’re looking for and he’s done that. So, that excites me. Today I thought he had a good day, good catch in two-minute drill. And just overall, I’m really excited about him. So, we’ve just got to keep chipping.”
You’re going against the Broncos defense today, but you’re going against DL Nick Bosa in practice almost every day. Was it nice to have him be blowing up another offense today and not having to work against him?
“Yeah, obviously we love the work when we can go up against Bosa and we know that he’s going to push us and make us be our best. But yeah, when practice ended, one of my first questions to one of the guys on defense was like, ‘how was Bosa?’ I’m sure it it’ll be fun to watch the film to see him compete against another team and stuff. But obviously we love our defense and love when they can get good work and have them go up against another good offense like the Broncos as well. So overall, I thought it was a good day just for all of us to be able to compete against some really good competition.”
What were your impressions about WR Jordan Watkins today and also the first two weeks of camp?
“Obviously I think Jordan has done a great job coming in, learning and end up putting everything together. I think both of us, we just need to continue to work on our chemistry and everything. We’ve had some really good connections, but at the same time, I feel like there’s some room to grow, both of us. Seeing how he moves and get in and out of his route movements and whatnot sort of like what Ricky and I have done, but we will get there. I have faith in that for sure. We have some time and I think today will be a good day to go sit down and watch the film and see what both of us did and keep chipping away. But Jordan’s done a great job and I’m excited for him this year.”
You always feel Nick Bosa when you’re out there. Do you feel that with the young rookie defensive lineman as well now? Are you starting to?
“Yeah, there’s been some days where those young defensive linemen have come in and got really good push in the pocket. And I think that’s something that us quarterbacks talk about. It’s good work for us to get some pocket movement, having to step up and rip a 12-yard basic on the backside or check the ball down. That’s real football. And we wouldn’t be talking about those kinds of reps if they weren’t doing that, getting good push and some duress on us quarterbacks and they’ve done that. So, I think overall, collectively there’s a chip on the shoulder in that room, the defensive line, and we feel it every day, especially at quarterback, we know that they’re bringing it. And so, coach [defensive line coach Kris] Kocurek has done a good job there.”
